Talking Gear Tuesday: Farm Marketing for Ag Contractors

If you have landed here because you are a grower looking to hire gear or find a contractor, give Dillon at Broadacre Contracting a call on 0439 300 380.

We will solve your problem straight away.

We generally say 6am to 9pm, but if it is urgent, it is urgent. Call anytime.

We do not help find staff, only gear and contractors.

I thought I should put that out there, since we often get asked.

The reason why is because we just do not have the capability at this point in time. We cannot vet and verify the quality, therefore we cannot touch it.

If you are going to do something, do it right.

But maybe one day it might fall in place. Who knows.

If your hands are not busy feeding in a new feeder chain or something, post a job on the Broadacre Contracting website. Create an account, go to My Account > New Tender Post > Post job.

Your phone will ring.

It is direct contact between you and our paid verified contractors. We do not take commissions and get in the middle of it.

Talking Gear Tuesday

Legends, welcome to my yarn about Talking Gear Tuesday.

It is actually the first time I have had the opportunity to properly explain Talking Gear Tuesday.

And now I am bloody really keen for this.

In a fair few yarns I have written, I have mentioned how I am green and have a lot to learn.

I said it in Marketing for Harvest Contractors, in my yarn with Fithall Ag about manure spreading, and in my yarn with Pitson Contracting about harvest.

Do not get me wrong, I am experienced, and what I am experienced in, I am highly experienced at.

Believe it or not, I pick up manuals and read them, and I pick up books and learn part numbers.

But anything outside of what I have been introduced to? I have no idea.

When we built Broadacre Contracting, I quickly learnt there is more to cropping than seeders, spreaders, headers and swinging spanners.

I thought I knew 70% of cropping. I now know I probably only know 30%.

Swallow the ego, legends. It is no good for you.

Sell the cruiser, they cost too much, and buy a little buzz box.

Now I have put all of that out on the table for a reason.

Talking Gear Tuesday.

What Is Talking Gear Tuesday?

Talking Gear Tuesday is Broadacre Contracting’s weekly ag video series where we sit down with farmers, contractors and ag operators across Australia.

We film the gear, hear the story, talk through the lessons, and put real industry knowledge out there for the agriculture sector.

It is part farm marketing, part agricultural videography, part farm contractor video series, and part old-fashioned yarn in the paddock.

But more than that, it is a way to get real knowledge out of people’s heads and into the hands of others who can learn from it.

Talking Gear Tuesday helps showcase:

Farm contractors
Growers
Machinery and gear
Real lessons from the paddock
Business stories
Standards and reputation

It is made by farmers, for farmers.

That line gets said a lot, but in this case, it is not just a slogan.

It is the reason Talking Gear Tuesday exists.

Where the Idea for Talking Gear Tuesday Came From

I bloody remember the very day the idea came to my head.

I do not really know about my head. It is wired different.

I am bloody wired.

Dropped out of school, could not concentrate, could not sit still.

But somehow I had these ideas and was just lucky enough to have the right people around me to support me, I suppose.

There is nothing like your team.

Speaking of which, do you want to come be a part of our team?

Anyway, going on a bloody Dillon side mission.

When the idea of Talking Gear Tuesday came to my head it had me rattled.

I was actually shaking, I was sweating, probably because the aircon in the tractor was a shocker, but anyway.

It works too well, either cold or nothing, constantly chasing it.

Bloody get into it, Dillon.

That day, I was in a pivot paddock at Corowa in the 8370RT with the Horsch Tiger, deep ripping a hard clay pan.

I was on the northern side, and I was coming into a real rocky section.

I was thinking to myself, I wonder why everyone was really getting into these Horsch Tigers?

Then it just clicked.

Mind you, it had been brewing in my head for a while, but it took that moment to somehow come to the head as something, if that makes sense.

At the time, I feel Broadacre Contracting had just been established, completed its first harvest, and we were going into our second harvest build up.

It was around April or May or something.

The corn had been harvested and we were still really finding our feet at Broadacre Contracting and what we were actually doing.

As soon as the idea hit my head, I dwelled on it for about 10 minutes.

I thought about how much I could learn, how much fun it could be, and what it would be like getting out there talking to people.

Just imagining the idea really.

I did not think about how we would do it, how the cameras would work, or anything like that.

I just thought about how useful it would be to the cropping sector.

I thought about the fact I could get out and shake hands with contractors and growers, have dinner with them, drink some beers and even sneak in a cheeky cigarette.

I am not really a smoker, but if I am with someone who does it, and after a few beers, I will want to enjoy one and enjoy the moment with whoever I am with.

Anyway, getting back to it.

It was not just about what I could learn and meeting the people in cropping.

The idea was also taking me down the route of what I could help other people learn.

Why Talking Gear Tuesday Matters to the Cropping Sector

I am a firm believer that if you do not know, you do not know.

But never pretend you do, because you will not learn.

One of the first things that came to me was the younger generation coming up who know it all, but do not.

I see it all the time.

I was even told it when I was younger: “You young fellas think you know it all.”

Unfortunately, I see it now I am older, and I feel it has accelerated.

That attitude now comes from social media, because they have seen something on TikTok and because they have seen it on screens, they now know.

So I was thinking, if I did this and the younger generation started watching and learning, myself and the people involved are essentially providing real knowledge.

Reliable knowledge. Real knowledge. Paddock knowledge.

It is real, it is factual, and it would be better for a sector that is now a consumer of phones.

The crews we are filming each week are sharing what is possibly generations of knowledge.

Things they have learnt that no one else may know.

All the way to the big things like controlled traffic and certain tyres.

In every episode, there is something little that can lead to something big for everyone.

You could not buy that.

You could not put a price tag on it.

But somehow, we could, and now are, putting it out there for the sector to benefit from.

What the sector can learn from TGT

Machinery setup decisions
Contractor business lessons
Controlled traffic thinking
Tyres, maintenance and reliability
Safety and capability standards
How good operators think

As soon as all this rattled through my wired head, I knew it had to happen.

We had to do this.

The positive impact it can have is really up there.

So there you go. A high school dropout had an idea, and now it is alive because our team made sure it would be.

Let’s Just Spend $25k and Hope We Can Keep Doing It: Where Is Talking Gear Tuesday Now?

After all the idea process, I approached Angus, who is also a founder of Broadacre Contracting, and explained it.

His response was, “I love it. Let’s do it.”

So we did it.

We both threw a lot of money at it.

Around $25k.

We engaged a videographer contractor and have now actually built a long-term relationship of supporting each other, which we both hope will continue for many years to come.

We fired it up without hesitation or playing around.

We sent a communications alert to the Broadacre Contracting community at the time, stating that this is what we wanted to do.

We had a $25k budget, so if you wanted it, we would come to you. Free.

Upon that process, most of the active contractors who showed interest were from the Wimmera and Mallee, all within 200km of each other.

They reached out, and then we reached out to a couple more, and they took us up on the offer.

So we determined we were heading that direction, and that was the start of Talking Gear Tuesday.

Our first actual mission led me down to Cobram, Howlong and Walbundrie.

By myself, with a huge ambition, a GoPro and a Samsung Note 10 phone.

Those episodes are actually still in the archive.

We built them, but did not actually go ahead with them and get them out to the world.

Do not get me wrong, they came up good considering.

Fast forward to now.

We have filmed 24 episodes.

The current date as I write this yarn is 23 June 2026, a month from being a year old.

Our first episode was released on 22 July 2025.

We Were Broke, But We Somehow Managed to Do It

It is pretty funny really.

Broadacre Contracting was founded and built by two lads who are young, and I would not say have money.

We managed to pull off Talking Gear Tuesday by working in our other jobs.

All the wages we earned, we scraped everything every week and literally threw it at Broadacre Contracting and any ideas like Talking Gear Tuesday.

I sold our caravan.

I sold everything we had, literally.

The only thing we have left is one family car that is reliable and a little Holden Barina that is missing hub caps, but it costs $15 a week to zip around in and it gets the job done.

Mate, I get some real weird looks when I am seen in this thing.

People stare down going, this bloke must have an addiction or something.

And they are right. I do.

I have an addiction to building a business that is going to contribute so much to ag.

Both founders of Broadacre Contracting have made the same disciplines, putting it all into the business.

And look at what it has done.

It is working, slowly, as it should.

We are getting there in being a trusted business in the cropping sector.

I have full faith we are going to achieve big things, but some days I get scared.

I have spent my life since 15 working, and everything I saved and built from then until now has been offloaded and put into Broadacre Contracting.

When you have a moment to sit down and realise your balls are really on the chopping board, and now you have a family to support and raise, it really does hit you.

So What Do Farmers and Contractors Get From Being Featured on Talking Gear Tuesday?

I mean, it could be nothing.

It could be a lot.

Depends on how you look at things really.

What I feel it does is it gives you the opportunity to put a face to your name.

That might not matter in your local community, but the world and the cropping sector is a lot bigger than that.

It instantly instils some type of trust in you and in us.

Let me clear the water straight off the bat as I am a straight shooter: Talking Gear Tuesday benefits us and you.

It is a two-way street.

Now that I have cleared that up, it also gives you the opportunity to share your knowledge.

That is where the trust and respect is built from.

Does it make you money instantly?

Nup, not a chance.

Does it allow you to open the door for business growth and to make money?

Yup.

So it does a lot of things.

It also does not do a lot of things.

But it is the seed phase pretty much.

Sow it into moisture and let it sprout, then give it some N to feed it and it gets a bit bigger.

It is all the same principles as growing crop, it really is.

It is just that there are some turns in the road along the way, and more options and opportunities.

I am going to probably end that here.

I am not going to sit here and talk it up to be some big blah blah or talk in a corporate manner to misguide you.

Talking Gear Tuesday is a good thing. It does good things. And it does not do some things.

Simple as that.

But it also comes back down to how you see it, how you value it and what you get out of it.

This Is Farm Marketing, Farm Social Media Marketing and Agriculture Videography Rolled Into One

I have literally just summed up what farm marketing, farm social media marketing, agricultural marketing, agriculture videography, whatever you label it, is.

It is really as simple as that.

What you put in is what you will get out.

For a contractor, Talking Gear Tuesday is not just a video.

It can become a piece of brand building.

It can show your gear, your standards, your team, your way of thinking and the kind of grower you want to work with.

For growers, it helps put a face to the name before you hand someone a job, a crop, a paddock or a whole harvest program.

What TGT can help build

Trust
Reputation
Staff attraction
Contractor credibility
Manufacturer visibility
Long-term business growth

It is not magic.

It is not “post one video and get rich.”

It is the starting point for building a stronger reputation and opening more doors.

That is the real value.
